The Story Behind Boutique Heidi's Liberty Scrappy Collection

If you've ever ordered from Boutique Heidi, you'll know I have a deep love for beautiful fabric.

I've never liked throwing anything away—especially fabric.

In fact, I'm sure I'm not alone! If you're a sewer, quilter or fabric love

r, you probably have a stash tucked away somewhere, convinced you'll need that little piece one day.

That's exactly how I feel.

Every Liberty print has been thoughtfully designed by talented artists and makers, and every piece of fabric represents generations of craftsmanship and creativity. Whether it's genuine Liberty or another beautiful cotton fabric, I always find myself looking at the offcuts and thinking...

"They're far too beautiful to throw away. You never know when I might need them!"

Over the years, those little pieces have filled boxes around my studio. Rather than collecting dust, they've gradually inspired new ideas, new products and eventually our Scrappy Collection.

While many people might simply see fabric scraps, I see possibilities. Every piece deserves the chance to become something useful, something beautiful, or something that brings a little joy to someone else.

It All Starts with a Handkerchief

Every Boutique Heidi handkerchief is carefully

 handcrafted in our Ballarat studio.

Whether I'm working with genuine Liberty Tana Lawn® cotton or other beautiful cott

on fabrics, every piece is planned carefully to make the best use of the fabric.

But even with careful cutting, pieces remain.

That's where the story really begins.

Cotton Finds Another Purpose

Not every fabric offcut follows the same journey.

Many cotton strips and pieces from our handkerchief-making process are reused to tie and help protect your orders during shipping.

Rather than using unnecessary ribbon, bubble wrap or plastic packaging, we give these cotton fabrics another useful life before they leave our studio.

It's one small way we can reduce waste while adding a thoughtful handmade touch to every parcel.

Liberty Is Different

Liberty fabric has always held a special place in my heart.

Every print has been created by talented artists and designers, and every piece feels too beautiful to throw away.

That's why our Liberty offcuts follow a completely different journey.

Almost every usable piece is carefully saved for future creations.

From Liberty Strips...

One of the first pieces left after cutting a Liberty handkerchief is the long, narrow strip.

If you're a Liberty lover, you'll understand why I save everyone.

Even the narrowest strip showcases Liberty's beautiful designs, and they're simply too lovely to throw away.

...To Pom Poms & Handmade Details

Those beautiful Liberty

 strips become colourful pom poms and decorative elements 

used throughout our Scrappy Collection.

Even the narrowest strip still showcases Liberty's beautiful designs, allowing another little piece of fabric to continue its story.

From Cotton Strips....

Now move to the cotton.Not every strip is Liberty. As we make our handkerchiefs, we're also left with cotton strips and pieces from other beautiful fabrics.

They're too good to throw away... too good to throw away...

...To Wrapping & Protecting Your Order

These cotton strips and pieces are used to tie your parcels and cushion your purchases during shipping.

Rather than using extra ribbon, bubble wrap or unnecessary plastic, we give these fabrics another useful life before they leave our studio.

It's another little way we're trying to reduce waste while adding a handmade touch to every order.

From Offcuts...

Not every piece is long enough to become a parcel tie.

Some are oddly shaped.

Some are just a little too small or too big.

Instead of discarding them, I sort them into different sizes, colours and patterns, ready for their next purpose.

...To Little Treasures

These tiny Liberty pieces are carefully transformed into many of our Scrappy Collection creations. 

You'll find them featured in:

• Bookmarks
• Gift tags
• Decorative bowls
• One-of-a-kind handmade pieces

Each creation is unique because every collection of Liberty offcuts is different.

No two are ever exactly the same. 

Even the Liberty Selvage Has a Story

One of my favourite pieces isn't actually part of the print.

It's the Liberty selvage—the white woven edge carrying the Liberty name.

Traditionally this edge is trimmed away during the cutting process.

I save it.

Those iconic branded strips are now incorporated into many of our Scrappy Collection products, giving this special part of the fabric another life and preserving another little piece of Liberty's story.

For Liberty lovers, it's a beautiful reminder that every creation is made using genuine Liberty fabric.

The Final Remnants

Even after creating our Scrappy Collection, there are still larger Liberty remnants remaining.

Some are bundled together for

 fellow makers, quilters and crafters to enjoy, while others are carefully stored away for my own patchwork and future projects.

A Boutique Heidi, nothing goes to waste.

Every strip.

Every offcut.

Every branded Liberty selvage.

Every remnant.

Each one is given the opportunity to become something beautiful once again.

More Than Sustainability

This isn't simply about reducing waste.

It's about respecting beautiful fabrics and the craftsmanship behind them.

Every cotton fabric deserves to be used thoughtfully.

Every Liberty print deserves to be appreciated.

By finding a purpose for almost every piece, we're able to

 create beautiful products while honouring the artistry that inspired them.

P.S.

I still have a few Liberty pieces I haven't found a purpose for yet—the unbranded selvage, stitched hems and a handful of curious little offcuts.

They're safely tucked away, waiting for inspiration to strike.
