Where Did Father's Day Begin?

Although Father's Day has become a much-loved Australian tradition, it actually began in the United States.

In 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd believed fathers deserved a day of recognition, just as mothers did. Inspired by her own father, William Jackson Smart—a widowed Civil War veteran who raised six children on his own—she campaigned for a special day to honour fathers.

Her efforts led to the first Father's Day celebration on 19 June 1910 in Spokane, Washington.

Australia adopted the tradition in 1936, celebrating Father's Day on the first Sunday in September. More than 90 years later, it remains a day to celebrate the fathers and father figures who have made a lasting difference in our lives.

Why Handkerchiefs Became a Father's Day Tradition

For much of the twentieth century, handkerchiefs were among the most popular Father's Day gifts. Alongside ties, socks, wallets and shaving sets, they were practical, thoughtful and something every gentleman used.
